Delhi school kids in Olympiad team
New Delhi/Bangalore, July 7, 2006
Students and teachers shone alike on Thursday. While the kids, three
from Delhi schools and one from Chennai, have made it to the Indian
team for the 18th International Olympiad in Informatics, the latter
won the 'Best Science Teacher' award for inspiring students to take
up science as career.
The schoolchildren, Harpreet Singh and Kshitij Bansal are from Apeejay
School in Noida while Prateek Karandikar is from Mother's International
in New Delhi and Swaran Kumar from PS Senior Secondary School in Chennai.
These students will represent the country in the Olympiad to be held
in Mexico from August 13 to 20. The students were chosen through the
Indian National Olympiad in Informatics, a nationwide competition
organised by the Indian Association for Research in Computer Science
(IARCS).
The award, instituted by the Prof CNR Rao Education Foundation, carries
a purse and a citation. It would be presented at a special ceremony,
to be held in Bangalore on July 10.
The awardees were selected by a panel of eminent scientists, educationists
and teachers constituted by the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced
Scientific Research.
The Foundation, established in 2005, was dedicated to promotion of
science education at all levels through financial support for students
pursuing science as a career and honouring science teachers for their
invaluable service towards science education.
